New Zealand’s working holiday scheme is an ideal way for backpackers to earn extra cash and gain work experience in a setting that is arguably the most beautiful in the world.

What is a Working Holiday Visa?

The New Zealand government offers a Working Holiday visa in order to allow backpackers to engage in casual labour to help fund either their gap years or extended travels. Different visas conditions are based on an applicant’s country of origin. In general visas under the Working Holiday scheme allow visitors to stay in New Zealand for 12 months or 23 months if you are from the UK.

What are the general requirements to qualify for a Working Holiday Visa?

  1. You must have a valid for at least three months after your planned departure from New Zealand.
  2. You need to be at least 18 and generally not more than 30 years old.
  3. You cannot bring dependant children with you.
  4. You must hold a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket.
  5. You must have a minimum of NZ$4,200 available funds to meet your living costs while you’re here.
  6. You must meet our health and character requirements.
  7. Your main purpose for travelling to New Zealand is to holiday, with work or study being secondary intentions for your visit.
  8. You can only apply for one Working Holiday Visa is your life time and must not have been approved under a Working Holiday Scheme before.
  9. You will also be required to meet certain health and character prerequisites.
